Andrew Francis, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Andrew W. Francis, M.D. is a board-certified, fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. He is committed to providing excellent patient outcomes with compassionate and personalized care.
Dr. Francis knew early in his career that he wanted to train to become an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of California at Berkeley and his medical school training at Boston University School of Medicine. As a medical student, he received several scholarships and research grants from Boston University, Fight for Sight, and The Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology. While in medical school, Dr. Francis traveled abroad to West Africa with the organization Unite for Sight and was selected as their volunteer of the year. Dr. Francis graduated from medical school in 2012.
Dr Francis completed his residency training in ophthalmology at the prestigious Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois at Chicago. While there he received several research awards and scholarships including from the Illinois Society to Prevent Blindness, Chicago Ophthalmological Society, and the National Medical Association. He completed his residency training in 2016.
Following residency, Dr. Francis pursued a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of California San Francisco. He performed hundreds of surgical procedures and published several more research papers during his fellowship training. Dr Francis completed his surgical fellowship in 2018.
After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Francis returned to Chicago and joined the faculty at NorthShore University. He was a clinical assistant professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and was heavily involved in residency education and training. He was featured in the “Defining Excellence” hospital newsletter.
Dr Francis started his private practice in 2020 in order to provide his patients with more personalized medical care. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, PLOS One, and Retinal Cases Brief Reports among others. He has also published multiple book chapters including in The Retinal Atlas and Vitreoretinal Surgical Techniques.
Dr. Francis is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Illinois State and DuPage County Medical Societies. He is fully licensed to practice medicine in both California and Illinois.
Dr. Francis enjoys several hobbies including spending time with his wife, extended family, and two cats. In his spare time, he also hikes, runs, exercises, and sails on Lake Michigan. He welcomes patients from all walks of life and is focused on providing them with the highest quality medical care.
